May 2nd, 2024 – It’s not unusual for insurance companies and hospitals to be at odds over the amounts paid and accepted for payment, especially in light of inflation’s impact on healthcare.

Most of the time the disputes are sorted out and hopefully that will be the case with the latest dispute between CommonSpirit Health and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Colorado.

CommonSpirit operates 10 hospitals across Colorado, including St. Anthony’s in both metro Denver and Summit County, Longmont United, St. Francis & Penrose Hospitals in Colorado Springs, St. Mary-Corwin in Pueblo and Mercy Hospital in Durango.

As of May 1st, most of the CommonSpirit system will no longer be in-network for the 1.5 million Anthem members across Colorado with the exception of St Elizabeth in Fort Morgan, as they have a different agreement, according to the Denver Post.

Insurance companies negotiations play a vital role in helping hold hospital system’s thirst for rate increases in check.  Discussions continue between Anthem and CommonSpirit and hopefully they will be able to reach an agreement soon.
